Sichuan copper coins, as the core circulating currency minted by local authorities in Sichuan from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, were not only a medium for trading goods but also a 'metal history book' recording the political changes, economic ups and downs, and social transformations of the Bashu region. From the start of machine-minted copper coins by the Sichuan Mint in 1903 (the 29th year of Guangxu) to their gradual withdrawal from circulation after the 1935 fiat currency policy, the history of Sichuan copper coin minting spans more than thirty years. It witnessed the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the outbreak of the Xinhai Revolution, the warlord-era conflicts, and the Nationalist government's reunification of the country. The styles evolved from Qing dragon-patterned coins to Republic-of-China 'Han' character coins, the varieties expanded from dozens to over a hundred types, and the materials shifted from red copper to brass, all reflecting the era's pulse and the struggles of local authorities. Between 1912 and 1917 (Republic of China Year 1 to Year 6), the Sichuan military government mainly minted coins in denominations of 10, 20, and 50 wen; in 1913 (Year 2), they added 100-wen coins, and after 1916 (Year 5), 200-wen coins appeared. During this period, huge amounts of coins were minted with various types, and coins of different years and denominations had subtle differences in text, patterns, and materials, showing the changes in military government power and minting techniques. For example, the 'Big Dot Han' version from Year 1 has a large, full dot in the seal script 'Han' character, which stands out from regular versions and is highly sought after by collectors; the 'Three Flowers' version from Year 2 features a four-petal flower on each side of the front, a typical trait of that time.
During the Qing Dynasty, Sichuan copper coins were produced using mechanized minting techniques, with finely engraved molds, clear inscriptions, three-dimensional patterns, excellent copper quality, and neat edges, reflecting the level of modern industrial technology. In the early years of the Republic of China, the military government minted copper coins, initially still using mechanized techniques, with high-quality red copper and a warm patina; however, as the warlord divisions intensified, the minting process gradually simplified. In later periods, sand casting was used, resulting in mixed copper quality, blurred inscriptions, rough edges, and even issues such as reduced weight and sand inclusions, directly reflecting the impact of political instability on currency quality. The classification system of Sichuan copper coins is extremely complex. Based on dimensions such as minting period, denomination, inscriptions, patterns, and materials, hundreds of varieties can be identified. Among them, the most collectible types are mainly concentrated in rare Qing Dynasty variants and special Republic of China issues: Sichuan Official Mint Guangxu Yuanbao, thirty-wen denomination: A trial strike that never circulated, surviving in extremely limited quantities, regarded as a 'prestigious item' among Sichuan copper coins, with market prices reaching several million yuan. Da Qing Copper Coin with 'Chuan' character, Bingwu year, Ministry of Revenue, twenty-wen denomination: Featuring rich dragon pattern details with multiple varieties, among which the 'Ministry-issued dragon' variety is rare and of higher value. Da Qing Copper Coin, Xuantong year, ten-wen denomination: Minted for a short period with few surviving specimens, representing the final issue of Qing Dynasty Sichuan copper coins.

Their more than thirty-year minting history reflects a microcosm of modern Chinese monetary history and the social changes in Bashu. They are not only tools for commodity exchange but also witnesses to political transformation, mirrors of economic rise and decline, and carriers of cultural memory. Today, the value of Sichuan copper coins has long surpassed that of currency itself. They have become important physical evidence for studying the history of local currency in modern China, Bashu culture, and the Xinhai Revolution, as well as a cultural link connecting the past and the present. A small copper coin carries the struggles and hopes of the people of Bashu, inscribes the suffering and brilliance of modern China, and continues to emit a unique metallic luster throughout the long river of history, reminding us not to forget our origins and to cherish the present.
