Premium Recommendation -Hunan Province Minted Double Flag Coin, Plum Blossom Error Version (30° Reverse Rotation)
In 1912, the Republic of China was established, marking the end of imperial rule and the complete withdrawal of traditional square-hole coins from circulation. Across the country, provinces utilized the remaining coinage machinery from the late Qing Dynasty to mint double-flag copper coins, meeting the demands of market circulation, military expenditures, and local fiscal needs. Among modern Chinese machine-made copper coins, the Hunan Provincial double-flag twenty-cent piece holds a place as one of the most diverse, complex, and collectible provincial issues. Since its initial minting in the early Republic era, factors such as die engraving, die repairs, machine wear, worker operation, and casting duration led to the emergence of dozens of variations in size and design. Against this backdrop, numerous errors arose, including plain versions, round chrysanthemum versions, flat chrysanthemum versions, plum blossom versions, long and short tassel versions, broken tassel versions, abundant and sparse wheat ears versions, large and small character versions, reverse impressions, off-center strikes, and double strikes. Among these, the plum blossom version and the flat chrysanthemum broken tassel version stand out as the two rarest and most distinctive branches. These two types represent the most iconic rare and renowned errors; when further combined with the typical casting error of a 30° reverse impression, they directly elevate from "rare versions" to the pinnacle of the Hunan double-flag twenty-cent piece system.
The reverse side of the Hunan Provincial Double-Flag Coin with Plum Blossom Misprint features the standard Jiahe design: two full bundles of rice ears with distinct leaf veins, clear English text, uniform spacing, and a layout primarily featuring 24 Jiahe swirls, representing an early orthodox design. Machine minting ensures relatively uniform shape, size, and weight of coins, enhancing production efficiency. The process involves creating precise molds, placing metal materials into them, and applying pressure via a press to shape the metal. For this misprinted coin, the minting technique is essentially identical to the standard version. However, the reverse error indicates an unexpected occurrence during the casting process, reflecting that while minting technology had advanced at the time, certain instability factors still persisted. The bimetallic coin is primarily made of copper, a material known for its excellent plasticity and wear resistance, making it suitable for machine minting. There may be slight variations in the copper quality among coins from different periods or batches, which is related to the sources and smelting techniques of the copper at the time. The quality of the copper also affects the coin's preservation and appearance—the higher the quality of the copper, the more lustrous the coin's color and the easier it is to preserve. In the coin minting process, the correct installation of the die is crucial to ensuring the alignment of the obverse and reverse patterns. If the die installer fails to accurately position the obverse and reverse dies due to improper operation, it can easily result in a reverse error. For the Hunan Provincial Mint's Twin Flag Coin, factors such as heavy minting tasks, worker fatigue, or inexperience among new workers may have led to die installation deviations, resulting in this 30° reverse error coin. During prolonged operation, casting machines may experience malfunctions such as transmission failures or uneven pressure distribution. These issues can disrupt the normal functioning of molds, causing relative displacement between the front and back molds during the casting process, ultimately resulting in reverse-sided coins. Although machine production was introduced at the time, the stability and reliability of the machines were relatively limited, leading to a higher probability of malfunctions. This was also a significant reason for the production of misprinted coins. The double-flag coin with plum blossom misprint from Hunan Province is a unique case in the minting of currency during the Republic of China era, reflecting the actual state and issues of monetary minting technology at the time. Studying this misprinted coin provides deep insights into the developmental level of coin minting craftsmanship, production management conditions, and the economic environment in the early Republic of China. It offers tangible materials for researching the monetary history of the Republic of China, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the Republic's monetary system. The use of the double flag and plum blossom patterns embodies the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures and the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture. The double flag symbolizes the new ideas of democracy and republicanism, representing the spread of Western political concepts in China; while the plum blossom, as a symbol of traditional Chinese culture, signifies the spiritual qualities of the Chinese nation. This misprint combines both elements, reflecting the collision and integration of social culture between tradition and modernity during the Republic of China era, holding significant cultural value.
The flat chrysanthemum edition is one of the most classic and highly regarded early versions of the Hunan Twin-Flag Twenty-Coin coin. Characteristics: The chrysanthemum above the twin flags is horizontally flattened, with slender and loose petals. It differs significantly from the standard round chrysanthemum edition—round chrysanthemum: round, compact, short petals; flat chrysanthemum: flat, spread-out, long petals. The flat chrysanthemum edition has a lower mintage than the round chrysanthemum, making it a rare variant. The fringe: two streamers on either side below the twin flags. Broken Tassel: The tassel on the left side is clearly broken or damaged. However, this is not due to circulation wear or post-production damage, but rather a fracture inherent in the mold itself, constituting a fixed variant. Broken tassels are a variant characteristic formed by prolonged mold wear and chipping. Once formed, all items in the same batch exhibit broken tassels, hence the term "Broken Tassel Variant.". The "Flat Chrysanthemum with Broken Tassel" edition is one of the most renowned varieties of Hunan's 20-wén coins, already recognized as a classic among copper coins. Front features of the Flat Chrysanthemum with Broken Tassel: - Double flags above the flat chrysanthemum - Horizontal oval shape - Delicate petals with natural layering - Clear broken tassel, with the left tassel band fractured cleanly and sharply, a characteristic of the mold Text style: - "Hunan Province Mint" and "Equivalent to 20 Wén" are early regular script, with bold strokes and deep letter cuts Flag patterns are distinct, the rim flowers flow smoothly, and the overall impression is robust. The reverse side features wheat ears and English text, mostly with 24 wheat ears arranged around, belonging to an early elegant design. The reverse is rotated 30° relative to the front, with a stable and uniform angle, indicating a batch error rather than an accidental misstrike. The Flattened Chrysanthemum Coin with Broken Threads is a minor but reputable variety. The probability of a 30° reverse strike is extremely low. When combined, they form the top-tier composite rarity of the Hunan Twin-Flag Twenty-Cent Coin. With an extremely limited surviving quantity, it stands as a star variety in copper coin auctions.
